Unspoken Sexuality

Bodil Joensen; famous for her bizarre pornographic movies involving sexual intercourse with non – human animals. Yes. You heard right, non – human animals. Researching about this movie, increased my curiousity to why she resulted to beastiality rather than sexual contact with a man or woman. To some of us this may be utterly shocking however to others entirely ordinary.

In 1964 the well – known pornography producer Ole Ege received a phone call from Bodil requesting to work together to produce the most famous beastiality porn movie – animal farm – where she performs countless indecent acts.  During this video they had numerous sexual activities with every animal you can think of that lives on a farm.

Researching about Bodil’s past revealed that she was very troubled. You may think ‘oh that’s typical’ but for me it put the way she acted into perspective. Throughout her life her father was absent and her mother was violently abusive. In 1956 while walking home from school she was brutally raped, and her mother blamed it on her. Due to her mothers abrupt response to her rape, she swore an oath to her mum that she would ‘fuck a boar’ which later was manifested. She was misunderstood and neglected – she was isolated. She rarely got human affection, so seeked it from the animals she loved. Most people imagine their first time to be really special with a guy or lady however Bodil’s first time was far from that idea. At the age of 12 she lost her virginity to her dog. She did have sex with a man but for Bodil it was not pleasing enough, and she was disappointed.

Later on in her life when she was independent and financially stable she possessed her own farm and rented it out so people could produce their own beastiality films. Not so long after she reached depression, this  lead to animal welfare coming round and finding the animals in a derelict state. It was so disgusting that the pigs were drowning in their own excrement, unfortunantley no animals survived. She ended up in prison and died in 1985 aged 40, drug overdose. As you can see she had an unusual, distressed life. Isolation facilitated her sexual contact with animals, like her dog, rather than a man or woman. It was what became her ordinary world.

Learning about Bodil made me think about what is beastiality like in todays society. I discovered a website ‘is it normal?’, where people reveal strange habbits or fetishes that they have, then other people comment whether they can relate or disagree. There are a range of stories on there from drunk women experimenting with their dogs, to people who are sober exploring their sexual side with a horse. One woman revealed that sex with a dog was more ‘faster’ and ‘intensive’ which aroused her even more than doing it with a man or woman. A statement that really shocked me was that some one said that if a women has sex with a dog its fine but if a man does then it’s rape – I can’t really comment on this apart from that person has a pretty deluded outlook on life.

There are many arguments for and against beastitaltiy. I’ve seen some people say that ‘if it isn’t rape then they shouldn’t care and pursue sexual act on non – human animals’. However some one else argued that ‘biologically it is not right as it serves no purpose’. This statement especially made me think about gay/lesbian/bi people, in the past not being straight was unusual and wrong because you can’t fertilise. Who ever you have sex or fall in love with can be any gender from male to female or to ladyboys or to a transman – whatever it is, you shouldn’t care. For years we have been fighting for gay rights, they’ve always been treated differently. Is this what it is going to be like for those who fall for non – human animals? Is it just a form of sexuality that is yet to be accepted? I’ve yet to form my own opinion on beastiality and zoopillia. For now it remains illegal but will always go on behind closed doors.
